ABOUT US

Hi, and welcome to Mocha Tonez!!
Created and designed by Tonia Wells, Mocha Tonez is designed to fit the needs of a niche market. It provides a product for women experiencing challenges in obtaining clothing that is proportionate to their individual body shape. In sharing my personal challenge, I discovered that this impacted women of color, mainly African American, Hispanic and Indian women, hence the name Mocha Tonez. The goal is to provide clothing that eliminates the need to spend additional money on alterations after purchasing from a retail store.
Mocha Tonez launched on October 29, 2017, at the Couture for Change Fashion show.
This site and glamour line are geared towards women of color – and we all have some have color in us! Even though we all come in different shapes, sizes and hues, we all have one thing in common – our beauty. The Urban Dictionary describes mocha as “light- medium brown skin. Some range in different tones. Yellow, Red, to Brown Bones”. Women come in all shapes and sizes and again, the standard offerings just don’t work for the majority of us. How many times have dresses fit at the top but not the hips and butt? How many of your skirts have safety pins cinching up a waist smaller than the hips? All the bunching and pulling, unraveling and twisting – is this really necessary? It shouldn’t be.
There are over 36 Million women of color spending more than $7 Billion dollars a year for beauty products. So why the lack of market attention and products? Good question!
Like you, I work hard for my money. Why would I spend it on make-do products and ill-fitting clothing? I’m tired of dealing with an unresponsive retail market limiting my choices. The market isn’t listening to women of color – we have needs and wants that are not being met with the standard products. Since the traditional market doesn’t want my business, I decided to create a new market – featuring clothing that hasn’t been available without a personal tailor on hand and beauty products for underrepresented skin tones.
The Mocha Tonez Inspiration
Sometimes a sister is more than a sister – sometimes she is phenomenal. In my case, my big sister Ketha was best friend and confidant, a second mother, my world. We moved around a lot so neither of us had long term childhood friends but we did have each other. I’ve always had big ideas and Ketha always encouraged me to make them happen. She believed I could do anything. Sometimes she believed in me more than I did myself! She kept me from letting my own fear and other’s negativity discourage me.
In 2014, Ketha suffered a stroke and later died in 2015. While I would do anything to get my sister back, the only thing I can really do is honor her spirit and belief in me. So . . . I am believing in my big idea and making it a reality - a reality for myself and for all the other women out there who need a champion like Ketha!
